I consider that growth in holiness, like physical development, does not just happen but it must be nurtured and tended with intention and care. For most of us, that nurture takes place in community, among those with whom we live and work and worship. Conclusion The Anglican spiritual ethos for holiness is directly linked with the events of the Reformation period, which Taylor experienced and in turn had an influence in his writings, even if we now feel an emotional detachment. The quest for holiness, which Taylor so ardently seeks, can pose challenges, and even the very acts of writing about it contain an element of danger.

Matthews points out that holiness does not know itself, but once it does it ceases to be holiness and becomes self-regarding. This does not need to be done in a pharisaic way with fuss or exhibition, but with an element of humility. His writings provide a solid basis to explore how can we ourselves become holier, and achieve a closer intimacy with God.
It is up to the individual to find ways to engage in this relationship, both individually 21 Matthews, , p.

Taylor is exhaustive in his writings, and perhaps at times he comes across as over descriptive, but he was determined to cover as much as possible, and to give theology to the laity, ensuring an interplay of scripture, tradition and reason. He firmly believed that prayer; reflection and practical living have the potential to be transformative, not just at an individual level but also through society.
Based on the writings of the Caroline Divines, particularly Jeremy Taylor, Anglicans can be equipped to better understand both their past and the present, seeking to bring persons more fully into relationship with God in terms of practices that shape fundamental intentions. As Taylor argues, it does require perseverance and commitment, but I would add that it is not beyond reach and it can be pursued if we are willing to try.

Out motivating aim to be holy is to please God, through passion, desire, longing, aspiration, goal and drive. Holiness is very much a relationship with God, which himself graciously imparts to us, whereby he reclaims us as his own and sets us apart for himself.
